Cycling and running have always had a slightly strange relationship in endurance sport.
Runners often believe cycling is simply a softer version of training. Cyclists sometimes believe runners spend far too much time getting injured.
Triathletes know the reality is considerably more complicated.
You need to become good at three different sports, and the training stress from one discipline affects what you can do in another. A hard run doesn't just affect your next run. It can influence your cycling, swimming, and overall recovery for the next few days.
That's why the question of cycling vs running isn't really about which sport is better. It's about understanding what each one gives you and when you should use it. The same principle applies to your equipment.

The simplest distinction is this: Running creates more impact and mechanical stress. Cycling allows you to accumulate more aerobic work with considerably less impact.
That difference is hugely important for triathletes. You can spend two hours cycling and accumulate a significant amount of aerobic training without subjecting your muscles, tendons, and joints to thousands of running impacts.
Try doing the equivalent amount of hard running, and the recovery cost can be considerably higher. That doesn't make cycling better than running.
It makes cycling a very useful way to build fitness without constantly adding running stress.
This is where things get interesting. Cycling can improve your aerobic fitness, which is obviously important for endurance running. It can also strengthen the cardiovascular system and provide additional training volume without the same impact as running.
But cycling cannot completely replace running if your goal is to become a faster runner. Running is highly specific.

You don't develop all of those qualities by sitting on a bike. So if your goal is to run a faster 5K after your bike leg, you need to run. The bike can support your running development, but it can't completely substitute for it.
Cycling is arguably one of the most useful tools in a triathlete's training program because it allows you to accumulate significant aerobic volume.
For example, an athlete might be able to comfortably complete a two-hour aerobic ride, but trying to turn that into a two-hour run is an entirely different proposition. The muscular and connective-tissue stress is much greater.
Build aerobic fitness: Longer rides provide substantial endurance training.
Increase training volume: You can add aerobic work without automatically increasing running impact.
Recover actively: Easy cycling can increase movement and blood flow while keeping mechanical stress relatively low.
Prepare for the bike leg: Unlike running, cycling also directly develops the discipline you'll actually race.
This is particularly useful for age-group triathletes who don't have unlimited recovery capacity.

There is a temptation among endurance athletes to look at cycling's lower impact and conclude that they should simply cycle more.
That's a mistake. If you're training for a triathlon, you ultimately have to run after swimming and cycling. Your body needs to be prepared for that specific demand. Running develops running economy, which is one of the most important factors in endurance running performance.
You also need to become comfortable running on tired legs. That's why brick workouts can be valuable.
A short run immediately after cycling isn't necessarily about trying to run fast. It's about teaching your body to transition between the two disciplines and maintain efficient movement when you've already accumulated fatigue.
Both sports can develop your aerobic system. The difference is how much training stress they create while doing it.
For many athletes, cycling provides a relatively efficient way to accumulate aerobic volume. Running provides a strong aerobic stimulus too, but carries greater mechanical loading.
That gives triathletes an opportunity to use the two disciplines strategically.
Instead of thinking:
"I need to run more to get fitter."
Think:
"What training stimulus do I need, and which discipline is the smartest way to achieve it?"
Sometimes the answer is another run. Sometimes it's an easy bike. That's the difference between simply exercising and actually training.
Both cycling and running can contribute to fat loss because both increase energy expenditure. But there isn't a magical cycling-vs.-running winner for weight loss.
The most effective option is the one you can perform consistently while recovering adequately. Running generally uses more energy per minute than cycling for many people, but cycling can often be sustained for considerably longer.
A two-hour easy ride may therefore provide a substantial training stimulus without leaving you with the same impact-related fatigue as a long run.
And nutrition still matters. You can't simply outrun or out-cycle a consistently bad and excessive diet.
If we're talking specifically about running speed, running wins. That shouldn't be controversial. The most effective way to become faster at running is to include appropriate running training.

But more isn't automatically better. One of the biggest mistakes I see is athletes trying to improve running speed by simply adding more hard running.

Cycling can help you build additional aerobic fitness while keeping some of that running-specific stress under control.
For triathletes, the question becomes much more interesting because cycling and running are not competing for the same job. They're complementary.
Your cycling can provide a large proportion of your aerobic training volume while also preparing you for the longest discipline in many triathlon events.
Your running needs to be specific enough to develop economy, durability, and race pace.
Your swimming adds another layer of aerobic and technical work.

The exact balance depends on your experience, race distance, and available training time. The important point is that you don't need to make every run hard. And you don't need to turn every bike ride into a fitness test.
Some sessions exist simply to build volume and help you recover for the sessions that matter.

If you're a beginner, consistency comes first. Don't immediately start adding huge amounts of cycling and running because you believe more training will make you faster.
Build gradually. If you're already training consistently, look at your overall weekly load.
Am I doing too much moderate-intensity work?
Are my hard sessions actually high quality?
Am I running often enough to maintain running-specific fitness?
Could some additional aerobic work be performed on the bike rather than adding another hard run?
Those questions are much more useful than asking whether cycling or running is inherently better.
