This is the biggest mistake. Many athletes turn sweet spot sessions into threshold workouts. The purpose of the sweet spot zone is finding the balance between training stimulus and recoverability. Too hard, and you lose the benefit.
Because sweet spot training feels productive, athletes often overuse it. Not every session should be performed at sweet spot intensity. Triathlon success still requires easy endurance training, higher-intensity work, and adequate recovery.
One reason sweet spot training for endurance is so effective is that it provides a manageable recovery cost compared with harder training. That doesn't mean recovery can be ignored. Fitness improves during recovery, not during the workout itself.
Power, pace, and heart rate are useful tools. They are not the objective. Training metrics should guide decisions, not control them.

Thousands of first-timers finish their debut race in a swimsuit, tri shorts, or whatever athletic gear they already own, and tri shorts are a genuinely good call for a sprint or shorter distance.
