Walk through the finish area of almost any marathon, Ironman, or major triathlon, and you'll see the same thing: exhausted athletes, medals around their necks and a surprising number of them wearing compression socks.
Which raises an obvious question. Do compression socks actually work, or have they simply become part of the endurance-sport uniform?
After more than 25 years working with athletes, I've learned to be suspicious of any piece of equipment that promises to make you faster without requiring you to train harder. Compression socks are no different. Legitimate science supports compression, but its benefits are more specific than the marketing sometimes suggests.
The important distinction is between performance during exercise and recovery after exercise. The evidence doesn't support treating compression socks as a magic performance enhancer. But that doesn't mean they're useless.
Compression socks apply pressure around the lower leg, usually with graduated compression. That means the pressure is generally greatest around the ankle and gradually decreases further up the leg.
The idea is straightforward: external pressure can help limit blood pooling and support venous return, particularly when you're standing or sitting for long periods. (I'm wearing compression socks as I write this article) This is one reason compression socks have long been used in medical settings and during travel.
For athletes, the theory is that this may influence circulation, swelling, muscle movement, and how the legs feel during or after exercise. But a plausible mechanism isn't the same thing as proven performance improvement.
That's where the research becomes interesting.

The recovery story is particularly important. A 2025 meta-analysis found that compression garments can help restore muscle strength and power following exercise-induced fatigue. However, a newer 2026 systematic review specifically examining post-exercise compression in endurance athletes found that soreness outcomes were directionally favorable but highly uncertain, with very low certainty of evidence.
In other words, compression may help recovery, but we shouldn't pretend that the science is stronger than it is.

Let's get this out of the way. Compression socks will not suddenly make you a faster runner.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 28 trials and 600 runners found no meaningful benefit to physiological measures, running performance, or perceived exertion when compression socks were worn during running.
An even larger 2025 review of compression garments included 51 studies and 899 participants. It found no significant improvement in race time or time to exhaustion, although compression did reduce soft-tissue vibration.
So if you're buying compression socks because you believe they'll knock two minutes off your marathon time, I'd save your money.
Sleep, nutrition, hydration, sensible training, and good pacing will have a much bigger impact. Compression is a supporting tool, not a substitute for doing the fundamentals well.
This is where the distinction between wearing compression socks during running and wearing compression socks after running becomes important.
If you like running in compression socks because they feel comfortable, reduce calf muscle movement, or simply make your legs feel supported, there's nothing inherently wrong with that. But don't expect them to provide a meaningful performance boost. The research doesn't support that claim.
For compression socks for running, I'd be more interested in how your legs feel afterward. A hard long run, marathon, hilly session, or demanding brick workout can leave your calves and lower legs feeling heavy. That's where compression may be worth experimenting with.
The key word is experimenting. If you feel better wearing them after a hard session and they're comfortable, that's useful information. If you notice no difference, there's no reason to force yourself to wear them.
There isn't one magic duration that works for every athlete. My practical approach is to use them when there's a clear reason rather than wearing them around the clock.
Put them on after a long run, hard bike, brick session, or race if your legs tend to feel heavy or swollen afterward. Think of them as one part of your recovery routine, not the recovery routine.
This is one of the more convincing uses. Long periods of sitting can contribute to lower-leg swelling, and systematic reviews have found that graduated compression stockings reduce swelling during flights. Research also supports a reduction in travel-related DVT, particularly in longer flights.
For athletes flying to a race, compression socks are a particularly practical piece of kit.
You can wear them if you like the sensation, but don't expect free speed. The research doesn't currently justify that claim.

For athletes using compression socks for recovery, a sensible starting point is a few hours after a hard session, rather than assuming longer is automatically better.
There's no strong evidence that keeping them on continuously provides greater recovery benefits. Cleveland Clinic advises generally wearing compression stockings while awake and removing them before sleep, unless a healthcare professional has specifically recommended otherwise. And they should feel snug, not painful.
If you experience numbness, tingling, significant discomfort, skin irritation, or unusual color changes, take them off. If you have a medical condition affecting circulation, significant unexplained swelling, peripheral artery disease, or other vascular concerns, speak with a healthcare professional before using compression garments.
Both provide compression around the lower leg, but they aren't identical.
Compression socks cover the foot, ankle, and calf. They're particularly practical for travel, recovery, and situations where you want full lower-leg coverage.
Calf sleeves start around the ankle and cover the calf without covering the foot.
That makes sleeves appealing to athletes who already have a favorite running or cycling sock and simply want compression around the calf.
For triathletes, there's also a practical difference: socks are an easy travel and post-race option, while sleeves can be more versatile when you want calf compression without changing your usual footwear.
The best choice is ultimately the one that fits properly and that you'll actually use.

This is where I think athletes sometimes get recovery backward. Compression socks shouldn't be the first thing you reach for after training.
Sleep.
Eat enough.
Replace fluids.
Manage your training load.
Move easily when appropriate.
Then consider recovery technology.
That's the approach I use with athletes: recovery tools should sit on top of the fundamentals, not compensate for poor habits.
Compression socks can be useful because they're inexpensive, portable, and require almost no effort. You can put them on after a hard session, wear them while traveling to a race, or use them during a demanding training block. They're a tool, not a shortcut.

I'd say yes, as long as you have realistic expectations. I wouldn't buy them because you think they'll make you faster during the run. I'd buy them because they're a relatively simple way to support recovery, manage lower-leg swelling, and make long travel more comfortable.
They're particularly useful for triathletes because our sport creates some very specific recovery challenges. You're not just recovering from one discipline. You're moving between swimming, cycling, and running, often while traveling significant distances to races.
That makes something portable and easy to use surprisingly valuable. And there's another advantage: individual response matters.
If two athletes complete the same race and one feels noticeably better after wearing compression socks while the other notices nothing, I wouldn't tell the second athlete they're wrong. Recovery is personal.
The science gives us the boundaries. Your own experience tells you whether the tool belongs in your kit.

So, do compression socks actually work? Yes, but probably not in the way the marketing would have you believe. They aren't a secret weapon for running faster, and the research doesn't support treating them as one.
Their more convincing uses are supporting recovery, managing swelling, and making long periods of travel more comfortable. For a triathlete, that's enough.
You don't need every piece of equipment in your kit to make you faster. Sometimes the best tools are the ones that help you recover well enough to train hard again tomorrow.
Use compression strategically, keep your expectations realistic, and let the fundamentals do the heavy lifting.
