One of the easiest traps to fall into as a triathlete is spending too much time in the middle.
You head out for an easy ride but gradually push the pace. Your recovery run becomes a moderate run. Your swim starts comfortably but turns into a sustained effort because you're feeling good.
None of those sessions is particularly hard. None is particularly easy either. Do that week after week, and you can end up accumulating a lot of fatigue without getting the full benefit of either genuine recovery or high-quality intensity.
That's where polarized training comes in. The basic idea is remarkably simple: make your easy training genuinely easy, and make your hard training hard.
It's not about making every week brutally difficult. In fact, the opposite is true. Polarized training creates enough low-intensity work to support recovery and aerobic development while giving you space to execute the harder sessions properly.
For triathletes balancing three disciplines, that distinction can be particularly valuable. The same principle applies to your equipment: remove unnecessary distractions so you can focus on the training.

Polarized training divides training intensity into broad categories, with most work performed at low intensity and a smaller amount at high intensity.
The middle, often called the moderate or “threshold-heavy zone,” is deliberately limited.

You'll often hear this described as 80/20 training. But don't become obsessed with the exact percentage.
If your training week is 76/24 or 85/15, you've not suddenly broken polarized training. The important concept is the distribution: a lot of easy work, some genuinely hard work, and less time stuck in the middle.
Triathlon already creates a significant training challenge because you're combining swimming, cycling, and running. That means you need enough training volume to develop endurance while also managing fatigue across three different movement patterns.
Polarized training can help by giving each session a clear purpose. An easy bike doesn't need to become moderately hard because you're feeling good. Its job may simply be aerobic development and recovery.
A hard run session, on the other hand, can be genuinely challenging because you've protected it with easier training around it. That contrast matters.
Easy sessions allow you to recover. Hard sessions provide the stimulus. The combination is more useful than turning every workout into some shade of moderate effort.

This is where most athletes need the biggest adjustment. Easy should actually feel easy. You should be able to breathe comfortably, maintain controlled technique, and hold a conversation during most low-intensity work.
For many triathletes, this means spending significant time in Zone 1 and Zone 2, depending on the session and individual training zones. Your easy swimming might feel almost too relaxed. Your recovery ride might feel like you're barely training. Your easy run might require you to slow down deliberately.

The hard component should have a purpose.

The mistake is thinking polarized training means simply doing more HIIT. It doesn't.
The high-intensity sessions are the smaller part of the program. Their value comes partly from the fact that you're able to execute them with quality because the rest of your training isn't constantly creating moderate fatigue.
Swimming can be particularly interesting because intensity isn't always easy to classify using heart rate alone. Heart rate responds differently in the water, and technical efficiency plays a major role.
Your polarized swim training might therefore include plenty of relaxed aerobic swimming alongside specific high-intensity sets.

The exact distances should reflect your ability and race distance. The important point is that not every swim needs to be a threshold session.
Cycling makes it easy to accumulate both high volume and high intensity, which makes intensity discipline important.
A polarized cycling week might include a longer easy aerobic ride, a recovery ride, and one or two quality sessions.
Easy: 60–120 minutes comfortably aerobic.
Hard: 5 × 4 minutes hard with 4 minutes easy recovery.
The easy ride should not quietly become a moderate tempo ride. If you're meant to be recovering, protect the recovery. When you're spending significant time on the bike, comfort matters too. A well-fitting SLS3 tri suit should stay comfortable and secure whether you're completing an easy aerobic ride or a hard race-specific session.
For triathletes, the bike doesn't exist in isolation. Brick workouts can help you practice running off the bike while keeping the session specific to the demands of racing.

Running requires even more caution because the mechanical load is higher.

The rest of your running should generally be much easier. That contrast is important. You don't need to run hard every time you put your shoes on.

This isn't a universal prescription. Your race distance, experience, available training time, and recovery capacity all matter.
But notice the pattern. There are clear hard sessions surrounded by a lot of easy work. That's the point.
This is where polarized training is often misunderstood. Threshold training isn't useless. Far from it. Threshold work can be extremely valuable for triathletes, particularly when preparing for the specific demands of a race.
The issue is “how much time you spend there”. If every easy session becomes tempo and every hard session becomes threshold, you can end up living permanently in the middle.
Polarized training doesn't say never train at threshold. It says “don't make moderate intensity the default setting for your entire training week”.

The 80/20 ratio is a useful concept, not a magic number.
This is probably the biggest mistake. If your recovery ride becomes tempo every week, you've lost the contrast that polarized training depends on.
The opposite problem also exists. If your “hard” session is only moderately uncomfortable, you may end up with a lot of medium-intensity training again.
Elite triathletes have years of training behind them and enormous recovery resources. Don't copy their 30-hour training week because you saw it on Instagram. Borrow the principle, not the workload.
A hard bike session and a hard run session aren't interchangeable from a recovery perspective. Your overall program needs to consider the combined load of all three disciplines.

Not necessarily. The best training approach depends on the athlete. Beginners may need to spend more time simply developing consistent aerobic fitness and learning how to train regularly.
More experienced athletes may benefit from a clearer polarized structure. Race distance also matters. A sprint triathlete preparing for a relatively short event will have different demands from an athlete preparing for an Ironman.
The useful lesson isn't that polarized training is the one correct way to train. It's that intensity distribution matters. Knowing when to push and, perhaps more importantly, when not to push is a major part of becoming a better endurance athlete.
Polarized training isn't complicated. Go easy when the session is supposed to be easy. Go hard when the session is supposed to be hard. Stop turning everything in between into another moderate workout.
For triathletes, that simplicity can be powerful.
You need enough easy training to build endurance and recover. You need enough quality intensity to improve the physiological qualities that matter for racing. What you don't necessarily need is to spend every day slightly uncomfortable.
The best training week isn't the one that leaves you exhausted. It's the one where every session has a purpose.
