Every triathlete will eventually face a long ride under a blazing summer sun, a lunchtime run in rising temperatures, or a race where the heat becomes as challenging as the course itself.
With 25 years of coaching endurance athletes, I've found that the athletes who perform best in the heat aren't always the fittest. They're the ones who respect it.
Training in hot weather doesn't make you mentally weak because you slow down. It changes the demands placed on your body. Understanding those changes (and adapting your training accordingly) can help you stay healthy, recover faster, and perform at your best when race day arrives.
When you're training in the heat, your body has two competing priorities: powering your muscles and keeping your core temperature under control.
To cool you down, blood is redirected towards the skin so heat can escape. At the same time, you're sweating more and losing both fluid and electrolytes. The result is that your heart works harder to deliver oxygen to your muscles, even when you're exercising at the same intensity. That's why your heart rate often climbs while your pace drops.
One of the biggest mistakes I see athletes make is trying to hit the same training targets they achieved in the cooler months. That's a recipe for unnecessary fatigue, poor-quality training, and, as we'll see later on, can actually be dangerous.
Instead, judge your session by effort. If you're using a heart rate monitor, let it guide your pace rather than your watch.
Most athletes know dehydration is a risk, but it's only part of the picture. During exercise in hot weather, you should also be aware of:
Dehydration from excessive fluid loss.
Electrolyte imbalances caused by heavy sweating.
Heat exhaustion symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, chills, headache, and unusual fatigue.
Heat stroke, a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.
If you experience confusion, stop sweating, or your symptoms rapidly worsen, stop and seek medical attention. No training session is worth risking your health.

Good prep begins well before you step outside. Hydrate consistently throughout the day rather than trying to "catch up" by drinking large amounts immediately before training.
If you're expecting a long or particularly sweaty session, include electrolytes for endurance athletes to replace the sodium lost through sweat.
Whenever possible:
Train early in the morning or later in the evening.
Wear light, breathable clothing.
Choose shaded routes where available. (easy if you live in the mountains, like me)
Carry fluids for longer sessions.
Tell someone where you're training if conditions are extreme.
These simple habits often make a bigger difference than expensive equipment.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned as a coach is that successful athletes adapt to the conditions rather than fight them.
During triathlon heat training, don't be afraid to:
Slow your pace.
Reduce session duration.
Focus on heart rate or perceived effort rather than speed.
Move key sessions indoors if conditions become unsafe.
In my experience, athletes who back off slightly in extreme heat often recover better and perform more consistently across the entire summer season.
The answer is yes, if it's managed properly. With gradual heat acclimation, your body becomes more efficient at cooling itself.
Over one to two weeks, many athletes begin to sweat earlier, lose less sodium in their sweat, and expand their blood plasma volume.
These adaptations reduce cardiovascular strain and make exercising in hot conditions feel more manageable. However, acclimation should happen progressively. Jumping straight into long, hard sessions in extreme heat dramatically increases your risk of illness without accelerating adaptation.
Recovery starts the moment your session ends. Begin by replacing the fluids and electrolytes you've lost, followed by a meal or snack containing carbs and protein.
If you've completed a particularly demanding session or race, active cooling can also help reduce thermal strain. Cold water immersion or ice bath recovery may leave you feeling more comfortable while helping prepare your body for the next training session.
Other recovery tools, such as compression boots, can also help reduce the sensation of heavy, fatigued legs after long rides or runs.
While no recovery method replaces quality sleep or good nutrition, combining several evidence-based strategies often produces the best results.

Training in the heat isn't about proving how tough you are. It's about making smart decisions that allow you to keep training consistently throughout the summer.
Respect the conditions, adjust your expectations, and prioritize recovery just as highly as the workout itself. Over time, your body will adapt, your confidence will grow, and you'll be better prepared for those inevitable hot race days.
In endurance sport, it's rarely the athlete who trains the hardest who succeeds; it's the athlete who can keep training week after week.
